In 1898, a group of schoolboys from Bremen won a football in a sports competition. They began using it to play together on the meadows beside the River Weser.
Their enthusiasm quickly became something bigger. On 4 February 1899, sixteen young men founded the club that would later become SV Werder Bremen.
The name “Werder” is linked to the area where they played — land shaped by the river. That connection to the Weser has remained part of the club’s identity ever since.
More than 125 years later, Werder still represents the same simple idea: sport can bring people together and create something much bigger than anyone expected at the beginning.
